How to approach Van Gogh geographically

Van Gogh's work maps directly onto the places where he lived and painted. His style changed dramatically at each stage, and seeing the paintings in context makes those shifts legible. The dark earth tones of the Dutch period (Nuenen, The Hague) give way to Impressionist experiments in Paris (1886–1888), the explosive color of Arles and Saint-Rémy (1888–1889), and the turbulent final canvases at Auvers-sur-Oise (1890).

  • Start with Amsterdam: the Van Gogh Museum covers every period, from The Potato Eaters (1885) through Almond Blossom (1890).
  • Add Otterlo for the Kröller-Müller Museum: Café Terrace at Night (1888), The Sower (1888), and a strong collection of drawings.
  • In Paris, the Musée d'Orsay groups major Arles and Auvers works on level 5.
  • For The Starry Night (1889), you need MoMA in New York (5th floor, permanent display).
