The world's largest Van Gogh collection, chronologically arranged across four floors. Ground floor: early Dutch works including The Potato Eaters (1885). First floor: the Paris period, with self-portraits and Japanese-inspired canvases. Second floor: Arles and Saint-Rémy masterpieces, including Sunflowers (1889), The Bedroom (1888), and Almond Blossom (1890). Third floor: Wheatfield with Crows (1890) and the Auvers paintings. Allow 2–3 hours. Open daily 9:00–18:00 (Fridays until 21:00). Located at Museumplein, a 5-minute walk from the Rijksmuseum.

Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo
Nearly 90 paintings and 180 drawings – the second-largest Van Gogh collection worldwide
Set inside the De Hoge Veluwe National Park (separate park entry required, €11.90). Key works: Café Terrace at Night (1888), The Sower (1888), Head of a Skeleton with a Burning Cigarette (1886), and The Potato Eaters (lithograph). The Van Gogh gallery is on the ground floor, rooms 1–8. Also has an outstanding sculpture garden (Rodin, Hepworth, Dubuffet). Open Tue–Sun 10:00–17:00. Reachable from Amsterdam by train to Ede-Wageningen (1 hour), then bus 108 to the park entrance.

Musée d'Orsay, Paris
Major Arles and Auvers paintings on level 5 – book online to skip the queue
The Musée d'Orsay holds some of Van Gogh's most celebrated works. Level 5 (top floor): Starry Night Over the Rhône (1888), Bedroom in Arles (1889 version), Self-Portrait (September 1889), The Church at Auvers (1890), and Doctor Paul Gachet (1890). The paintings hang alongside Cézanne, Gauguin, and Seurat, making the Post-Impressionist context immediately visible. Open Tue–Sun 9:30–18:00 (Thursdays until 21:45). Closed Mondays.

MoMA, New York
Home to The Starry Night (1889) – 5th floor, permanent display
The Museum of Modern Art's most famous single painting is Van Gogh's The Starry Night (1889), on the 5th floor in the Alfred H. Barr galleries. MoMA also holds Portrait of Joseph Roulin (1889) and Olive Trees (1889). Open daily 10:30–17:30 (Saturdays until 19:00). Tickets can be purchased same-day, but weekday mornings are least crowded.

National Gallery, London
Sunflowers (1888) and Van Gogh's Chair (1888) – free admission, Room 43
The National Gallery holds two iconic Van Gogh paintings in Room 43 (Post-Impressionist galleries, Sainsbury Wing level 2): Sunflowers (1888, the London version, one of five in the series), and Van Gogh's Chair (1888). Also nearby: Long Grass with Butterflies (1890). Free entry; no booking needed, though timed tickets are recommended for special exhibitions. Open daily 10:00–18:00 (Fridays until 21:00).

Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat (1887) – Gallery of Honour area
While the Van Gogh Museum is the primary destination, the Rijksmuseum holds a small but important group of Van Gogh paintings on the first floor, near the Gallery of Honour. The Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat (1887) is the highlight, painted during the Paris period using a pointillist technique. Allow time for the broader Dutch painting collection (Rembrandt, Vermeer) while here. A 5-minute walk from the Van Gogh Museum.

The Bedroom (1889, third version) – Gallery 241
The Art Institute holds one of three versions of The Bedroom (1889), displayed in Gallery 241 alongside other Post-Impressionist works. Also here: Self-Portrait (1887) and The Drinkers (after Daumier, 1890). The museum's Impressionist wing is one of the strongest outside Paris. Open daily 11:00–18:00 (Thursdays until 20:00).

19 works on ArtAtlas – Impressionist and Modern Art galleries, second floor
The Met holds 19 indexed Van Gogh works, making it one of the most significant collections in the United States. Highlights include Wheat Field with Cypresses (1889), painted at Saint-Rémy shortly before his release, and Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat (1887), a key example of his Paris period. The Impressionist and Modern Art galleries on the second floor display the collection in the context of Monet, Cézanne, and Gauguin — the painters Van Gogh was in direct dialogue with. Allow at least 90 minutes for this floor alone.
