Musée National Marc Chagall, Nice

17 Biblical Message canvases (1954 – 1967), stained glass, mosaics – book in advance in summer

The only museum in the world dedicated entirely to Chagall. The main hall displays the twelve large-format canvases of the Message Biblique cycle: scenes from Genesis and Exodus rendered in intense, saturated color. A separate room holds five Song of Songs paintings in deep reds and purples. The concert hall contains three stained glass panels depicting The Creation of the World (1971), visible only when the room is open. A mosaic of the prophet Elijah decorates the entrance pool. The museum sits on the Cimiez hill, a 20-minute walk uphill from the city center or a short bus ride (line 15). Open daily except Tuesday, 10:00 – 18:00 (May – October) and 10:00 – 17:00 (November – April).

Musée d'Orsay, Paris

Smaller Chagall selection, early period works – upper level, post-impressionist galleries

The Musée d'Orsay holds a more limited Chagall selection, but its post-impressionist and early-modern context helps trace the artistic environment Chagall entered on his first arrival in Paris in 1910. Check the current display before visiting, as specific Chagall canvases are not always on show. The museum is closed Mondays.

MOMA, New York

I and the Village (1911), Birthday (1915) – Floor 5, painting and sculpture galleries

MOMA holds two of Chagall's most recognized paintings. I and the Village (1911), with its split-screen composition of a green-faced man and a cow, is one of the defining images of the artist's early Parisian work. Birthday (1915) shows the artist floating above Bella Rosenfeld in their Vitebsk room. Both are typically displayed on Floor 5 among the early modernist galleries. MOMA is open daily, 10:30 – 17:30 (Saturdays until 19:00). Book online to avoid queues, especially on weekends.
